Set in magnificent surrounds, Great Alpine Inn was built in the 1970's in European Chalet style, and run as a very popular Austrian restaurant. Recently renovated and reopened with central stone fireplace, vast overhead beams and polished hard wood floors, the Inn is warm and welcoming.
The alterations were planned to enhance the original design and charm of the chalet, with a curving staircase on to an expansive deck built to take in the view of the picturesque snow covered Mt Feathertop (in winter), making an ideal backdrop for a wedding ceremony or pre-function drinks and nibbles.
The addition of large glass doors and skylights open the venue up and create a light, airy feeling and easy access to our beautiful gardens.
The Garden
The original landscaping was designed to reflect the European mountains. Thirty five years on, magnificent Spruce, Cedar and Birch trees abound in the expansive lawn gardens. Recent additions to the garden offer spring and summer blooms and splendid autumn colours, along with an impressive rose garden and formal hedging. Bright flower boxes surround the deck and colourful hanging baskets filled with cascading petunias are suspended from the beams.
An artist inspired water feature & pond adjoins our rustic wedding pavilion which was built with timber from the old Harrietville bridge and provides a perfect backdrop to your outdoor wedding ceremony or special occaision.
The Food
The food is fresh and innovative, and servered in generous proportions. Everything is hand made utilizing local produce where possible. It’s true modern country hospitality at it’s best. No one will go home hungry!
The Bar
The wine list boasts an impressive array of local talent. For the more budget conscious we have lower priced “House Wines”. Beverage packages are also available.
We are fully licensed until 1am Friday and Saturday evenings or 11pm on other nights
The Chef
Owner / Operator Kate Palmer’s passion for quality food and service spans more than a decade. She has an impressive background in catering including two years working and achieving a Cordon Bleu Cooking School Certificate in Europe. On her return Kate had a stint working for Peter Rowland Catering before taking up a 5 star corporate traineeship in hotel management with the Park Royal Melbourne Hotel.
Kate has run her own catering business since 1993 when she started Palmiers Catering at Gordon Place (Little Bourke St, Melbourne)
Kate moved to the Alpine Region in 1997 and have a natural affinity here. As an owner operator, nothing is left to chance, all areas of your function are handled with the personal touch.
The Capacity
The venue can seat up to 120 people at round tables.
If a dance area is required seating is limited to 90 – 100 people.
The deck can be covered with marquees offering seating for a further 60 people.
In it’s expansive lawn area Great Alpine Inn can accommodate a large marquee for over 200 people.

It can cater for 300 – 350 guests at a cocktail party.
The Accommodation
A lovely treetop, two bedroom, self contained apartment at Great Alpine Inn is available for hire. It sleeps up to 4 adults with all linen provided. Rates are $130 per night for 2 people (2 night minimum on weekends, extra people $20 per person per night). This includes a substantial Continental breakfast. Children and pets are welcome.
The township of Freeburgh has a caravan park, which has self-contained cabins
